What are Travel Assistance and Out of Country Coverage?
Travel Assistance programs offer plan members non-medical and medical assistance before they leave home and while they are out of the country. The items covered depend upon the insurer and the plan and may include:
- 24/7 access to services in multiple languages
- Advice on Passport, Visa, Vaccination, and Inoculation requirements
- Replacement of lost documents and tickets
- Referral to legal assistance in a foreign country
- Telephone interpretation service
- Medical emergency assistance
- Referral to local medical care
- Monitoring of medical care
- Payment of medical bills
- Medical transportation
- Return home of dependent children
- Visit by family member
- Trip interruption/delay coverage
- Identification and/or return of a deceased traveller
Out of Country Coverage provides the plan member with benefits for the medical costs associated with a medical emergency such as doctor, hospital and lab fees. An out of country medical emergency is classified as an unforeseen injury or illness that begins while the insured person is travelling outside his/her home province. Treatments required for a pre-existing medical condition (a medical condition diagnosed prior to the trip) may be excluded. However, even with a pre-existing medical condition, you may still be eligible for coverage if your medical condition is stable and controlled at the time of departure. Inclusions and exclusions will depend upon the insurer and the plan.
